I offered money to two national newspapers in Nepal to print this design as advertisement. One refused citing legal reasons; the other stopped communicating with me. The design draws from the Hindu symbolism and colors in the flag of the recently secularized Nepal. The text in Japanese reads “Is Nepal a Nation?”, and the out-of-context face (of Greg Uyeda) emphasizes the same question of national identity. The cut-out border encourages people to define their own identity, which, at the moment is torn as shown at the bottom of the design.
